Chancellor champions networks

Wednesday 30 November 2011

Energy Networks Association (ENA) was heartened today by the encouraging words in the Chancellor’s Statement about the vital role of the energy networks.

ENA Chief Executive David Smith said:

“I welcome the recognition by the Chancellor that the UK energy networks are a world leader, highlighting the electricity transmission networks 99.9999 per cent system reliability.”

Commenting on the Chancellor’s commitment to creating a smarter network David said:

“The smarter network will empower the public and help them save money. We are ready to address the technical challenges that the Chancellor has set out to connect and balance supply and demand in more efficient ways”.

Commenting on the Chancellor’s view that gas has a critical role in our energy future David said:

“The fact that the Chancellor wants to see a market framework to support a diverse mix of gas sources is welcome. That he sees a role for the gas networks way beyond the completion of the mains replacement programme is very encouraging.”

An independent report by Imperial College has shown that an integrated smarter network can save £16bn of infrastructure investment. If we can realise the full potential of such advances in technology then we will not only deliver energy efficiency and reduction but greater affordability and security of supply.
