Next for Net Zero

Our Next for Net Zero series showcases the work going on across our sector to deliver decarbonisation and meet the government's legal target of Net Zero by 2050 and 2045 in Scotland.

Next for Net Zero podcast

We have launched a new podcast series hosted by sustainability journalist Lucy Siegle as part of our ‘Next for Net Zero’ programme. The series showcases how the UK energy networks are supporting decarbonisation and getting beyond the headlines through in-depth and informal discussion.

The new, limited, series consists of four 30-minute episodes. Each weekly episode addresses a different theme and features a range of representatives from the UK’s energy networks who will delve into topics such as innovation, sustainability, transport and resilience.

The energy networks are driving innovation across all of these areas and, as the voice of the networks, ENA is uniquely placed to create a platform for policy makers and industry insiders to provide unique insights and effective solutions.

  • Episode #1: The Innovation Landscape

Energy networks are at the frontline of our smart power revolution, having launched the first whole systems innovation strategy earlier this year, amongst a variety of other landmark activities, with data showing that since 2009, network companies have trialled and tested over 2,000 innovative ideas.

To discuss this, and much more, Lucy was joined by Lorna Millington, Innovation Manager at Cadent – the UK’s largest gas distribution network. And Iain Divers, Head of Network Planning and Development at SP Energy Networks – that distributes electricity across Cheshire, Merseyside, Shropshire, Central and Southern Scotland and North Wales.

The podcast is available now on Spotify and Podbean.

  • Episode #2: Unlock & Understand: Achieving a more sustainable future

This episode examines how we are tackling a sustainable future – with Net Zero hurtling towards us at great pace. We’re around a year on from the pledges made at COP26, the UK’s Green Recovery initiative is well under way and by next year, Britain is aiming to blend up to 20 per cent hydrogen into its gas networks. So now is the time to continue to unlock new insight and understand further the realities of both the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The guests are Rhian Kelly, Chief Sustainability Officer at National Grid Electricity and ENA's own Director of Gas, James Earl.

The podcast is available now on Spotify and Podbean.

  • Episode #3: Transporting to a greener world

This episode examines how the networks are playing their role in reducing in transport emissions, including electric and hydrogen vehicle innovation. Guests include Matt Hindle, Head of Net Zero and Sustainability at Wales and West Utilities and Florentine Roy from UKPN, who is a Project Lead for the Optimise Prime project and one of UKPN's leading experts on EVs.

The podcast is now available on Spotify and Podbean.

  • Episode #4: The role of resilience and readiness

On this episode, Lucy is joined by Eliane Algaard, Operations Director at SSEN and Fergus Tickell, System Transformation and Business Development Lead at SGN, to discuss innovation & infrastructure building, future preparedness, the lessons learned from last year's storms and what innovations are being implemented to improve resilience in the future.

The podcast is available now on Spotify and PodBean.
