Update at 1130am

Damage caused by Storm Lilian has resulted in power cuts across parts of England today (Friday 23 August). Engineers have reconnected 20,000 customers as of 1130am and continue to work to reconnect around 41,000 customers who are without power. Those currently without power are mainly in the north east of England.

Correction: we previously stated 'north-west England' when in fact it is 'north-east England'

Engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible and expect to reconnect the majority of customers today.

We would like to thank customers for their patience as our members’ engineering teams work to establish the extent of the damage and carry out the necessary repairs.

Customers can enter their postcode at PowerCut105.com to see updates from their local network operator.

Mark Dunk, Energy Networks Association's Head of Engineering and Resilience, said:

"As our members work hard to reconnect customers, it's important we ask everyone not to approach any fallen power lines or any other damaged electrical equipment. Keep as far away as possible, warn anyone in the area to stay clear and call the free emergency number 105 to report it. Calling the emergency number will connect you to your local electricity network operator. If there's an immediate danger to life, dial 999."

Notes to editor

We will update our Newsroom with updates throughout today.
