Paying tribute to our friend and colleague Mike Leppard

09 July 2024

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of our beloved friend and colleague, Mike Leppard. Mike, ENA’s Senior SHE Adviser, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday 6 July, with his wife Sarah by his side. He was tragically diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer only months ago and, unfortunately, lost his battle with the illness.

Jamie Reeve, Head of Safety, Health and Environment, said:

“I've had the privilege of visiting Mike over recent weeks, and he would like me to convey his gratitude for the messages sent by so many people. Mike was deeply touched and appreciative of the kind words shared about him. He was a true gentleman, an exceptional professional and a wonderful human being. His presence will be greatly missed by many, and I will personally miss him as a friend and confidant. My thoughts are with Sarah and Mike's family during this immensely difficult time. Rest in peace."

David Spillett, former Head of Safety, Health and Environment, said:

"I am heartbroken at this sad news. Mike was a dear friend and work colleague who I have known for 16 years. We had some great times which I will look back on fondly. I was fortunate to see Mike recently and although he was obviously poorly we still laughed about the good old days. That last get together I will cherish forever. You are now at peace, sleep well my friend."

Lawrence Slade, Chief Executive of ENA said:

“Over nearly 16 years with ENA, Mike had a tremendous impact and influence on our safety, health and environment work. There was hardly a conversation about SHE in the industry without being able to notice Mike’s quiet and unassuming influence at work. He will be tremendously missed by everyone here at ENA and within our membership and broader family. Our thoughts are with Sarah and family at this very sad time.”

David Smith, former Chief Executive of ENA said:

“Mike was key to helping me and ENA build our key SHE competencies making the ENA team the industry leaders and to who others came to for advice and counsel. Mike was integral to the team whose level headed advice I know will be deeply missed by the team and the wider industry."

Cordi O’Hara, President, National Grid Electricity Distribution and Powering Improvement Champion, said:

“We are thinking of Mike’s family at this very sad time. Mike did so much to improve the culture around safety, health and environment in our industry. He will be greatly missed."
