Energy Networks launch definitive Portal for smart grid development

For immediate release – Tuesday 25 June 2013

Energy Networks Association (ENA) has today (Tuesday) launched the Smarter Networks Portal as the definitive place to find information, updates and learning on the Smart Grid.

The Portal, which ENA was tasked by Ofgem to deliver as part of its innovation stimulus, will bring together the experience in the UK with the developments around the world through a repository of innovation, ideas and projects to help deliver a Smart Grid. It will also play a key part of the work for the DECC/Ofgem Smart Grid Forum.

The Portal is already populated with the latest learning from the Low Carbon Networks Fund projects and will shortly hold over 500 innovation projects covering the Innovation Funding Incentive and the Registered Power Zone work. The latest Ofgem Price Control explicitly incentivises innovation and this will be reflected in the Portal when it also holds the Network Innovation Allowance and Network Innovation Competition projects from gas and transmission as well as electricity distribution.

Speaking at the launch of the Portal, ENA Chief Executive David Smith said:

"ENA is incredibly proud to be launching this 'go-to' place for smart grid development as a smarter network will be an essential part of meeting the challenges of our energy future. The injection of innovation has revitalised the sector and it continues to drive progress towards achieving a more efficient and effective grid.

"As technology and innovation change the way we work, the Smarter Networks Portal is about capturing how we are adapting and sharing the learning for the benefit consumers.”

Speaking at the launch, Dora Guzeleva, Head of Networks Policy at Ofgem, said:

“I’d like to congratulate ENA on the launch of the Portal; it is a very important milestone and a great window for the innovation stimulus. We are pleased to see all DNOs undertaking projects, leveraging significant external funding and generating positive interest world-wide.

“Learning is a key deliverable of our innovation stimulus and the portal will provide access to project information as well as key contacts. There is already evidence that DNOs are adopting some of the new methods into business as usual activities.”
