UK to chair European Smart Grid forum

For immediate release – Tuesday 29 May 2012

A European forum on Smart Grids is being led by a UK industry leader, as Energy Networks Association Chief Executive David Smith has just been appointed as its chair. The first meeting under his chairmanship took place on Friday (25 May 2012).

European distribution networks organisation GEODE, which David Smith is Vice President of, has established this smart grid group specifically to aid the EU development in Smart Grid thinking by sharing expertise and feeding this back into the EU Commission.

A wide range of smart grid issues were discussed including the network benefits of smart meters, the potential for demand-side response, data privacy and electric vehicles.

Carmen Gimeno of GEODE said:

“This group brings together young bright minds from across Europe. David’s expertise and that of the UK networks will complement this very well and help steer these important discussions.”

UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry has described ENA as “the hub” for co-ordination and focus of the work on networks innovation and the smart grid.

Speaking about this new appointment David Smith said:

“I’m delighted to have been asked to chair this group. A smart grid is a vital part of our energy future in the UK, and, as an interconnected Europe. Projects funded by Ofgem's Low Carbon Networks Fund are helping energy networks in the UK to make a smart grid a reality.”
