ENA welcomes Ed Davey’s comments on future role of gas

For immediate release – Monday 19 March 2012

Commenting on Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey’s announcement of greater confidence for investment in the infrastructure and security of supply for gas, Energy Networks Chief Executive David Smith said:

“We strongly welcome Mr Davey’s comments and we share his belief that there is an essential and long-term role for gas in delivering a secure and low carbon energy future.

“As well as being the cleanest fossil fuel, the developments of biogas and carbon capture and storage technologies will help the UK meet climate change targets for energy generation affordably.

“We must also consider the vital role gas plays in heating our homes and for cooking. It is the fuel of choice for the vast majority of the country and critical to addressing fuel poverty. We hope that the Secretary of State will ensure his Departments upcoming Heat Strategy will reflect this welcomed position.”
