electricity: resources for KS1 & 2

Wind turbines
Wind turbines are like modern windmills which use the power of the wind to generate electricity. Each wind turbine is like a small power station. The wind turns the wind turbine, which is used to turn other wheels which turn the magnets inside the coils of wire which generate electricity.

Coal and gas fuelled power stations
We burn gas and coal to heat water which turns into steam. We then use the steam in a big powerful stream, to turn big wheels, called turbines, which then generate electricity.

Nuclear power stations
Nuclear or atomic power stations use the power of the atom to make heat. Atoms are the smallest particles which make up everything around us. If you split an atom you generate a lot of heat. We use that heat to make steam to power big wheels called turbines, to generate electricity.
