how does gas get to the customers?

Transporting gas is a tricky, dangerous job because it is flammable, and takes up a lot of space.

How is it done?

  • One way to make transport gas is to pump it through underground pipes to huge gas tanks where it can be stored until it’s needed.
  • Another way is to turn it into a liquid, by cooling it right down and storing it under pressure. Once it has been turned into a liquid it can be taken to where it is needed by ship or lorry.

  • Gas can be delivered into your house as gas through a pipes which run under the streets, a bit like water, where you turn it on as you need it.

  • Some people who live right out in the country where there isn’t a network of domestic gas pipes under the roads, have a big gas tank in the garden and get their gas delivered by lorry, as a liquid, two or three times a year.
