Metal theft lobbying campaign wins Big Society award

For immediate release – Friday 29 June 2012

Energy Networks Association (ENA) is delighted to have been awarded the CBI Trade Association Forum ‘Big Society’ Award at the award ceremony last night for its campaign for a change in the law to tackle metal theft.

The TAF Award ceremony, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, recognises, rewards and promotes best practice amongst Trade Associations in the UK. The award comes a week after the announcement that Richard Ottaway MP will be proposing all the law changes set out by ENA in his Government-backed Private Members Bill.

The ‘Big Society’ Award is given to a campaign or initiative that, as well as benefitting the association’s members, has an outstanding impact on the wider society.

ENA Chief Executive David Smith said:

“I am thrilled and grateful for this recognition of ENA’s work. Attacks of metal theft against the energy networks hit an all-time high last year, reaching an average 21 per day. But the benefits of a change in the law go much further than the industry victims and the attacks against war memorials, churches and our nation’s heritage struck a chord with the country.

“I’d like to thank colleagues in ENA for their work and all those who have worked with us so far on this campaign. Metal theft continues to be a dangerous and destructive crime that risks the lives of innocent people. Mr Ottaway’s Bill is a huge step and it has been made possible by extensive work by us and many affected industries and heritage groups.”

Richard Ottaway MP will present his Private Members Bill for its second reading in the House of Commons on Friday 13 July.

ENA represents the ‘wires and pipes’ transmission and distribution network operators for gas and electricity in the UK and Ireland.
