ENA Gas Futures Group Appoints KPMG for Important Gas Study

For immediate release - 15 January 2016

Energy Networks Association’s Gas Futures Group (GFG) has appointed KPMG to carry out an independent study on the role of the gas networks in Britain’s energy future.

The GFG, which includes representatives from across the UK’s gas network companies, launched a tender for a report to examine the role of gas, and the gas networks in the future energy system, alongside an analysis of alternative scenarios.

KPMG has been appointed through this tender process to consider the main drivers and trends that will impact on the long term development of the energy system such as technology, decarbonisation targets, and demand profiles and their impact upon the gas network. The report will evaluate a full range of scenarios to represent how the energy system may develop to 2050, and identify policy initiatives to realise the benefits emerging from this analysis.

ENA Chief Executive David Smith said, “The continued role of the gas network in future heat policy will be crucial to delivering an affordable and secure low carbon transition which considers the impact of consumer choice.

“This important report will build on the work ENA has done in this area, and I am pleased that KPMG will be supporting this contribution to the UK’s energy debate”

Alistair Buchanan, Chairman of Power & Utilities at KPMG said “There remains a great deal of uncertainty about how the UK energy system may develop over the longer term. KPMG is delighted to be given the opportunity by ENA to contribute to this agenda by conducting an independent study examining the role of gas and gas networks in the future energy system.”

Support for this work will be provided by ENA GFG members, as well as Kiwa GASTEC and Imperial College. A final report will be published by the end of April 2016.
