New Government must ensure stability and independence of regulation

For immediate release – Tuesday 12 May 2015

Welcoming Amber Rudd as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change and Andrea Leadsom as Energy Minister, Energy Networks Association (ENA) has called on the new Government to provide stability to the industry and allow Ofgem to work independently.

ENA Chief Executive David Smith said:

"Energy will undoubtedly remain at the top of the Government's agenda as the industry continues to deliver solutions to one of the biggest challenges we face. The networks are a critical part of ensuring secure, affordable and sustainable energy into the future but for long term investment to benefit consumers, regulation should be consistent and independent.

"If the government provides clear direction and certainty for network investment, companies can develop the smarter networks of the future, discover ways to improve reliability and flexibility of infrastructure while keeping costs down."

ENA set out 10 key policy areas for the government before the election. ‘General Election 2015: The Agenda for Energy Networks’ calls on the Government to deliver new ways for a stable regulatory environment and effective connections policy; investment in skills and innovation; increased interconnector capacity and the right conditions for long term infrastructure planning. The vital role of the gas networks and green gas is also emphasised, alongside the need to continue supporting fuel poor communities through connections to the gas grid.
