Energy Storage Overview
Since the establishment of the Energy Storage Operators Forum (ESOF) in April 2012, we have seen the gradual increase of both Network Operator installed energy storage and 3rd party owned energy storage.
In December 2014, ESOF successfully produced the Good Practice Guide on Electrical Energy Storage, which was well received by the wider industry. The work carried out by ESOF was disseminated at the 2013 and 2014 LCNF conference, with the decision to keep a watching brief from then onwards.
The level of interest in energy storage has increased with the recent Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) ancillary service, introduced by National Grid in September 2015 with the focus on flexibility and storage featuring more recently in the National Infrastructure commission report ‘Smart Power’.
Currently storage issues are being managed through a variety of working groups – DG Technical Forum, Low Carbon Technologies Working Group and the Export Limiting Devices working group.
